The process involves burning the wood to create a carbonized layer that enhances its durability, makes it water-resistant, and provides natural protection against insects and decay. Historically used in Japan for siding and fencing, this method also brings out the wood’s natural grain, creating a unique aesthetic with deep textures and rich, dark tones.
